Many of you know that we here at Jughandle’s Fat Farm have been working on a program that would allow you to scan a product’s bar code into your smart phone and have it tell you if it is a safe food for your family.  Well, Foodfacts.com has beaten us to the punch and now has a FANTASTIC APPLICATION (APP) that we highly recommend to ALL of our readers.

Organic Shopping is catching on!

It’s working, organic shopping is catching on.  You are spending over $30 billion per year to avoid toxins in your food and over half of that spending is for organic food.

Other things to look for

In addition to the organic vegetable isle, you should be also looking for organic food in places you wouldn’t necessarily think of.

Hormone-Free Desserts

Normal ice-cream is produces from cows that are fed antibiotics, hormones, genetically engineered corn and soy.  Look for ice-cream labeled organic.  The cows will have to been fed a natural diet of grass and hay.  Their fat will contain heart-protecting and cancer preventing fat called CLA or conjugated linoleic acid.

Cage free chicken eggs

Most eggs found in your store are from chickens that are crammed into a small cage and fed hormones and antibiotics and are sprayed with insect spray.  The sales of organic eggs have doubled in the last few years.  Cage free and organically fed chickens are happier and produce healthier more nutritious eggs.

Shampoo and skin care

Just yesterday, the local news was informing us that women apply over 80 different chemicals to their bodies daily.  Men only 30.  I won’t list them all here but the most shocking to me was that lipstick contains lead.  Yes lead!  You are putting lead in your mouth, or at least on your mouth.  Shampoo is just as bad.  Look for organic products with skin care too.  NATURAL or ALL NATURAL means absolutely NOTHING!

Here is just a taste of what you are getting:

Isopropyl Alcohol– inhalation or ingestion of the vapor may cause headaches, flushing, dizziness, mental depression, nausea, vomiting, narcosis and coma.

Mineral oil- Baby oil is 100% mineral oil. This commonly used petroleum ingredient coats the skin just like plastic wrap. The skin’s natural immune barrier is disrupted as this plastic coating inhibits its ability to breathe and absorb the natural Moisture Factor (moisture and nutrition). The skin’s ability to release toxins is impeded by this “plastic wrap”, which can promote acne and other disorders. This process slows down skin function and normal cell development causing the skin to prematurely age.

PEG – This is an abbreviation for poly-ethylene glycol that is used in making cleansers to dissolve oil and grease as well as thicken products. Because of their effectiveness, PEG’s are often used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners and yet are found in many personal care products. PEG’s contribute to stripping the natural Moisture Factor, leaving the immune system vulnerable. They are also potentially carcinogenic.

Propylene Glycol – basically antifreeze –  There is no difference between the PG used in industry and the PG used in personal care products. It is used in industry to break down protein and cellular structure (what the skin is made of) yet is found in most forms of make-up, hair products, lotions, after shave- deodorants, mouthwashes and toothpaste. It is also used in food processing. Because of its ability to quickly penetrate the skin, the EPA requires workers to wear protective gloves, clothing and goggles when working with this toxic substance. The Material Safety Data Sheets warn against skin contact, as PG has systemic consequences such as brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. Consumers are not protected not is there a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is greater than that in most industrial applications.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – Used as detergents and surfactants, these closely related compounds are found in car wash soaps, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers. Yet both SLS and SLES are used more widely as one of the major ingredients in cosmetics, toothpaste, hair conditioner and about 90% of all shampoos and products that foam. Mark Fearer in an article, Dangerous Beauty, says “…in tests, animals that were exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, along with depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation and corrosion and death”. According to the American College of Toxicology states both SLS and SLES can cause malformation in children’s eyes. Other research has indicated SLS may be damaging to the immune system, especially within the skin. Skin layers may separate and inflame due to its protein denaturing properties. It is possibly the most dangerous of all ingredients in personal care products. Research has shown that SLS when combined with other chemicals can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens, which causes the body to absorb nitrates at higher levels that eating nitrate-contaminated food.” According to the American College of Toxicity report, “SLS stays in the body for up to five days…” Other studies have indicated that SLS easily penetrates through the skin and enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, the liver, the lungs and the brain. This poses serious questions regarding its potential health threat through its use in shampoos, cleansers and toothpaste. Animals that were exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, along with depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation and corrosion and death.

Chlorine – According to Doris J. Rapp, M.D., author of Is This Your Child’s World?, exposure to chlorine in tap water, showers, pool, laundry products, cleaning agents, food processing, sewage systems and many others, can effect health by contributing to asthma, hay fever, anemia, bronchitis, circulatory collapse, confusion, delirium, diabetes, dizziness, irritation of the eye, mouth, nose, throat, lung, skin and stomach, heart disease, high blood pressure and nausea. It is also a possible cause of cancer. Even though you will not see Chlorine on personal care product labels, it is important for you to be aware of the need to protect your skin when bathing and washing your hair.

FoodFacts.com contains easy to understand and quick to find information on a broad range of food products found in our local stores.  Just type a product name or manufacturer into a search box and a list with pictures of the available product information comes up.  There is even a “Products” tab that lists groups of products to choose from.  Search methods include “Keyword”, “Ingredients”, “UPC Code” “Recipes” and “seaarch to compare.

Kid Safe Alert: Sunny D

This blog is dedicated to helping you make the wise, healthy food choices.  With that in mind, Jughandle’s Fat Farm can not recommend Sunny D made by Procter & Gamble for either you or your children.

Read the Label

The two major ingredients are water and corn syrup.  Less than 2 percent is concentrated fruit juice.  The rest is artificial colors, sweeteners, canola oil and sodium hexametaphosphated.

Miss leading health claims

The label says 100% vitamin C.  That alone is NOT health.  Many vegetables and fruits contain 100 percent of your daily allotment of vitamin C in a single serving.

More Reasons to buy Organic

If you haven’t gotten on the organic band wagon, I’ve got some more convincing to do.  The following is largely from an article in Organic Gardening Mag.

Think about it

You should be eating a heavily weighted diet of plants and raw foods.  I don’t want to hear the same old BS that we are meat eaters and should be eating red meat.  That may have been true 100 years ago, but not know.  Chemistry has gotten into our diet.  Chemists have found ways to increase the yield of everything and haven’t thought about the long term costs until recently.  If you don’t eat organically grown food you are ingesting 12 or more chemicals  and pesticides that can  HARM you, your family and your future family.  The hormones in the dairy and meat we eat are changing the size of the human race.

Corn

Maybe you’ve heard of the chemical “Roundup”?  Supposed to be one of the safest weedkillers around.  So safe that chemists have genetically engineered crops like corn to be “Roundup ready”, meaning that a corn crop can be planted then when the weeds start to grow and compete with the corn, Boom, just fly by with a crop duster and spray Roundup on everything and the genetically engineered corn being resistant to the Roundup lives on while the weeds die.

Sounds great, doesn’t it.  Not so much.  Roundup is not just salt as we might have heard.  The main component of Roundup is GLYPHOSATE.  Glyphosate is a systemic chemical, which means it is absorbed into the root system of the plant.  People being lazy, greedy, bastards, farmers are no exception.  They found that using Roundup increased the yield of their crops and was a whole lot easier and cheaper to use.  So much so that researchers can find glyphosate in RAIN and in the air and of course our ground water and streams.  In 2009 the USDA says that farmers sprayed 57 million pounds of glyphosate on food crops.  That alone is reason to buy and eat organic.  Not convinced?  I’ll proceed.

Glyphosate

To be brief – glyphosate is a hormone-disrupting chemical.  It is linked to metabolic damage, infertility, obesity, learning disabilities and birth defects.  Need More?  Really?  If you are smugly thinking that you are a meat eater and don’t eat much corn, think again.  Most cattle are raised on CORN and that corn is Roundup ready.  Don’t believe me – take a trip to Nebraska.

In fact if you live in a corn growing state like Nebraska, you are drinking glyphosate in your household water unless you have a granular activated carbon filter to remove it.

We are eating Crap!

I’m not just being crude.  Human sewage sludge is used as fertilizer in farm fields.  Yes, that is a potential source of salmonella out breaks or worse.  I make this point because another huge problem is hormone-disrupting phthalates which are very common fragrance chemicals used in soaps and shampoos.  Phthalates are being found inside our produce and the only reasonable source is the sewage sludge.  EAT ORGANIC- the use of human sewage is banned in organic farming.

Fat and don’t know why?

May be you eat too much.  But maybe it is the pesticides that are making us fat.  Even in very low doses, pesticides tamper with our body’s natural weight loss chemistry.  These are also linked to cancer and type 2 diabetes, go figure.

The nice thing is that eating organic for just five days can rid the body of virtually all pesticide residues.

What to avoid?

Avoid synthetic fragrances, soft vinyl products and “slow release” or gel-coated medications to eliminate phthalates.  And of course eat organic.

More reasons

Pesticides can interfere with your vitamin D levels.  Organophosphates are a class of pesticides that include 20 or more different pesticides and account for more than 70 percent of the pesticides used in the US.  It is known that these pesticides interfere with the body’s ability to metabolize vitamin D.  D, known as the sunshine vitamin protects us from cancer, diabetes, infections, heart desease, broken bones and boosts our immune system.

Feed Lot Farming – now this is a story in its own right, but hopefully you’ll read it anyhow.  Feed lots are a farming method to raise a large number of cattle or fowl in a small space.  The animals are herded into tightly packed pens or corals.  They are fed in situations that force the animals to eat their own feces.  These “Lots” are so filthy the farmers inject low levels of antibiotics into the animals to keep them health, which in turn end up in the meat we eat and cause antibiotic resistance in humans.  All mass produced animals including cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, dairy cattle and sheep are raised this way.  In such conditions pests can also be a problem, so farmers spray the herd or flock with pesticides which also get into their food.

Conditions are so bad that e.coil bacteria is a problem, so to prevent it from getting into the food supply, after slaughter, one method is to wash chickens in a chlorine bath that contains 30 times more chlorine than a swimming pool.  To mask the chlorine odor and supposedly to keep the bird moist while cooking, the chickens are then injected with a solution of water and phosphate.  Phosphate can increase our risk of kidney disease, weak bones and even cause premature aging.

Blue No. 2

FD&C Blue No. 2 is also called indigo blue or indigotine. It is a synthetic version of indigo, a dye naturally produced from plants. Indigotine, on the other hand, is a petroleum product, with the chemical formula C16H10N2O2. It is used in baked goods, cereals, ice cream, snacks, candies and cherries.

Hyperactivity

In September 2007, a study reported by D. McCann and colleagues in the journal “The Lancet” linked artificial colorings, including Blue No. 2, to hyperactivity. Nearly 300 children in the study were given a beverage with artificial colors and a preservative. Drinking the beverage resulted in increased hyperactivity in the children, which the researchers attributed to the artificial coloring or the preservative or both. As a result, one candy company, Nestlé-Rowntree, stopped selling one of its candies with a blue shell until it replaced the artificial color with a new blue color made from spirulina, a blue-green algae.

Cancer

In a group of studies reviewed by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Blue No. 2 did not affect reproduction or cause birth defects in rabbits or rats. However, male rats in one group that received a high dosage of Blue No. 2 had statistically significant increases in brain cancers and other abnormal cell development. No human studies have been reported, and experts disagree about the safety of Blue No. 2, according to the CSPI. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that FD&C blue no. 2 is safe for use in food and supplements, according to the Code of Federal Regulations. The CSPI asserts that Blue No. 2 is not safe for human consumption. Since it adds nothing to the nutritive value of food and evidence for its safety is questionable, CSPI recommends it not be used in foods.

Save our Children

Thanks to input from concerned parents like my nieces, Cristy, Kellie and Heather, beginning January 1, 2012, Jughandle’s Fat Farm is implementing a new globally available program to provide safe food information for anyone buying food for their children.

Goal

Our goal is to provide a data base of food names that can be easily searched using a smart phone while shopping in the grocery store.  We are already working on an app that will allow the shopper to simply scan a food’s bar code with their phone and within seconds a symbol will appear that will tell the user whether or not the food meets the “Safe Kid” food standard.

The data base information will be available on the menu bar of this blog to get complete additive and nutritional information on each food as fast as we can enter it.  Look for the “Kid Safe” menu item.

In addition to the the Kid Safe data base, the Fat Farm intends to campaign to our local governments, congress and national representatives as well as to join existing efforts to change and implement necessary legislation to test all food additives for long term effects on growing children’s minds and bodies.

We will need your help to make this work.  We need you to submit to us the name and manufacturer of the food you’d like information on.  Please just drop us an email at jughandle@jughandlesfatfarm.com to tell me about what you buy for your children to eat.  We’ll do the research that will allow you to make informed decisions about the food that fuels your child’s growth.

Standards

You are the only one capable of deciding what is safe for your children to eat.  We are only going to provide information and recommendations to make it easier for you to decide.

Additives

The focus of this data base is not going to be calories and nutritional information like we’d use for an adult diet plan.  The focus is going to be on food additives and chemical preservatives.  From an article posted by Robyn O’Brian in 2009:

The Kid Safe Chemical Act addresses the fact that back in 1976, with the passage of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), legislation was approved that allowed over 60,000 chemicals in existence at that time to be deemed ‘safe’ for use without a single thorough test to prove that to be true. And in the three-plus decades since the law was passed, an additional 20,000 chemicals have been rushed into the marketplace with little or no safety tests.

Today, 1 in 3 American children has allergies, ADHD, autism or asthma, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reporting stunning increases in the number of children expected to be insulin dependent by the time they reach adulthood. With 17.6% of our GDP being consumed by health costs, there is an urgent need to address the health of our children and the impact that this generation of children is having on our country, our families and our health care system.

The Kid Safe Chemicals Act, or Kid-Safe, would help protect the health of the American children by placing the burden of proof on the chemical industry, requiring manufacturers to first prove a chemical is actually safe before it’s allowed into a consumer product. Currently, all of these chemicals are allowed into the marketplace until they are proven dangerous.

If that clip scares you, consider that it was written in 2009!  40 years ago when I was in school I didn’t know any one  who suffered from ADHD, autism or even asthma.  Today with more that 1 in 3 children showing symptoms of these problems, it has to be more that even environmental factors.  It has to be in our food.

Work In Progress

This “Kid Safe” program was dreamed up by my niece Cristy just last night.  After learning that the color additives to her child’s food are unsafe, Cristy spent 2 1/2 hours “Goggling” everything she put into her  shopping cart.  Cristy’s idea, that we are kicking off today, is to be able to quickly check a food while shopping to see if it is safe for her child.

Conclusions and Recommendations
